Edgar Allan Poe's poem, Alone, is one of my favorite poems by him. It really makes you think about what it is that he is saying, and if it applies to you.
“From childhoods hour I have not been
As others were; I have not seen
-Since Poe was young, he was different, never fit in
-His views were completely different that others
“As others saw; I could not bring
My passions from a common spring”
-Poe saw things differently form others
-His passions were different from theirs
-He took is interests from a different spring “source”
“From the same source I have not taken
My sorrow, I could not awaken”
-Others took interest and saneness from the spring,
-Poe took sorrow
-I could awaken can mean different things
-Could not wake up dead parents
-Could not wake up interests
“My hear to joy at the same tone
And all I’ve loved I’ve loved alone”
-Poe couldn’t get his heart to “joy” at the same tone,
-In same way
-Very powerful, leaves you think what you’ve loved…alone
“Then, in my childhood, in the dawn,
Of a most stormy life--was drawn”
-Poe had a “stormy” or troubled childhood
-His life is dark or depressing
“From every depth of good and ill,
The mystery which binds me still”
-From both good and bad times, still tormented
-Makes you think what the mystery is
“From the torrent, or the fountain
From the red cliff, of the mountain
From the sun that round me rolled
In its autumn tint of gold”
-Carrying on of the pervious
-These are the good things Poe sees in life
“From the lightning in the sky
As it pass’d me flying by
From the thunder and the storm
And the cloud that took the form”
-These are the bad things
-Poe manages to see the darkness, not the good
-He understands the good, such as the sun and the sky
-He sees the badness, such as the lightning
“When the rest of heaven was blue,
Of a demon in my view.”
-The blue of the sky represents the good in the world
-Poe sees it, but the view is still blocked by haterid, or, the demon
