Who they are and why they inspire you (1-2 paragraphs)
My favorite athlete/someone who inspires me is my old volleyball coach. Coach was someone who wouldn’t back down from a challenge. Someone says it’s humanly impossible to run 27 miles per hour? She would try to prove them wrong. Obviously she wouldn’t always be successful, but, that would never get her down. Coach also cared about the justness of a game. Since she was a volleyball coach, she obviously wanted her team to win. But, she also wanted her team to deserve every win, and if she ever saw any missed calls from the line watchers, she would always report it to the ref, even if it meant we would lose the point. Coach inspires me because she cares about physical activity and was determined in bettering her quality of life, and her teams. Being led by her made us want to work hard, and want to deserve every win we won. I look up to her because she contains traits that I wish to see in myself. I one day want to motivate people to better themselves, I also want to care about what I’m doing with the same passion that she did. What lessons can they teach you about perseverance, or sports and physical activity in general? (1 paragraph) Coach, to me, was the definition of perseverance. She would put her mind to something and wouldn’t stop until she got it done. For example, once she set us the task that our 15 player team had to stand in a line, and in a row, each would have to serve the ball 10 times perfectly over the net. Now, considering the varying talents of my team, it seemed impossible. It seemed impossible for some people to even serve the ball perfectly once! But, each of us had to go in a line serving the ball one at a time, and if one of us missed, the whole team would have to start over again. Obviously there was groaning when we were close to finishing and someone messed up, and it almost took three hours, but, we got it done. Never once would Coach punish or ridicule us for messing up, she would only tell us how to improve and would cheer us on the next time we went. By the end of the day, we all felt closer and harder working as a team. Without Coach’s leadership, we wouldn’t have gotten it done. Under the leadership of some, we might have been allowed to throw in the towel and quit, but, Coach showed us the benefits of perseverance. I hope to use this perseverance to succeed in physical activity. I will actively work to establish the same drive I had then to the way I work out every day. Even when the going gets tough, I know working hard, persevering, and keeping determined will lead to success. 1. What does this space look like? The more descriptive the better! My ideal workout space is somewhere without distraction so that I can keep on task and motivated. This ideal space would have to be somewhere with a positive environment, it can’t be too busy, and I would prefer it be a cool temperature. This place would preferably have a variety of different exercise machines, because when I am trying to get a full work out and I only have access to say a treadmill, I know I won’t be meeting my full potential. I would also like this place to have a pool. Considering I’m so tall, doing a lot of running type exercise is damaging on my knees, so, doing aquatic exercise and swimming laps in a pool is beneficial to me. 2. Why did you choose this space? A space that will provide an area to work out without distraction is important to me because say I am trying to use a home gym, I know after a certain amount of time I would find something to distract me. I find it better that I use a facility that is simple and clear so that I can reach my maximum workout potential and know that I won’t have anything to get in my way. I would like this ideal space to dispose a positive environment because I always work best when I know I won’t be judged for doing something wrong, rather helped and showed how to correct what I am doing. I want to be somewhere that isn’t too busy, because where I am somewhere with a lot of people, I often feel crowded or rushed, which inevitably leads to me wanting to leave early or quit what I am doing. I would also want a place that has moderate temperatures because if I overheat while working out, I won’t be able to go for as long and as hard as I want to. I would want a place with a variety of exercise machines because having options of what to do often prevents seeing working out as a repetitive task, but rather an activity that I know will challenge me to work hard. I don’t want to overwork myself, so, if I am in an environment where I can work hard and feel motivated to do so, I know I will succeed. 3. Is there a place near you that is your ideal workout environment? If not, how can you create one? There is a place near me that provides an ideal workout environment, there is a gym by my house that later this week I am going to attend three times a week. I am excited to start going to this gym and get a personal trainer because so far, the only kind of exercise I have had access to is going running/jogging around my town. Although I enjoy these jogs, it is important to get a variety of exercise for a complete workout. The gym is not too busy and provide a cool, safe environment to work out. It also has a lap pool and an aerobics pool. This is a good environment for me because I know I will succeed if the environment I am in allows me, and motivates me to work hard and push myself as far as I can go. I'm happy that I have ISPE to help push me and provide further meaning to the work that I am doing. This year, I want to be able to balance a healthy lifestyle with a healthy academic and personal life; I think ISPE will help me achieve that. Upon having to move to ISPE due to a scheduling error, I realized I would have to take my exercise and motivation more seriously. In the past, I have relied mostly on being told what to do and when to do it in regards to exercise. In the past, I have gotten the majority of my physical activity through club volleyball. Since I am no longer on a club team, I’m determined to become more independent with my physical activity. Every week, I will be going to the gym at a minimum of three times. On top of that, every night I will be (and have been for a while) jogging around my city with my baby sister in order to put her to sleep. I moved to Napa from Southern California two days before school started, and I didn’t move into my actual house until the first of September. Because of this, my first time sheet consisted completely of jogging/running through my city and a wooded trail by my house since it was all I had access to. I want to move above this minimum level of physical activity as soon as possible, and take my exercise regime more seriously.
Starting in the next two weeks, I am going to begin seeing a personal trainer several times a week. This will help me keep on track and keep motivated to exercise. I hope the lifestyle that will arise will propel me into an overall happier, and healthier life. More frequent exercise will lead to me sleeping better, staying better hydrated, help boost my energy, and improve my mood. I have known the benefits of exercise for years, yet the extent of the exercise I commit would be rollerskating every other day for an hour and walking/jogging with my family. I have alway found excuses stopping me from getting a trainer or going to the gym. I would always think I wouldn’t find time or I wouldn’t be able to get all my school work done. But, I realize that spending an hour or so a day working out won’t be a major time consumer on my day, and the positives outweigh any negatives. I hope that by the time the end of the year comes, I will be maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Joining Independ PE is a step in the right direction in a way that it provides motivation, if i can't summon it myself. When I have nothing to do, I will think, “Okay, right now I can either watch TV or go online, or walk down the street to the gym.” Knowing that I will be graded on my decision, and considering the fact that I am actively working to better my life in any way possible, I will have the motivation and resources to make the better choice. I feel that joining Independent PE will improve my life in many ways. I will spend my time making healthier choices, and I will work hard to be a better person. There is a lot that I want to take from Independent PE, by the end of the year, I am determined to be a healthier person.
I have had my fair share of sports related injuries, so, I know what to do in the event of an accident. If I’m using a machine and accidentally get cut, I will use my towel to stop the bleeding and apply a bandage. If it isn’t too bad, I don’t see any reason to stop the workout. Obviously if I am in pain or if it is in an inconvenient area then I will stop for the day. If I was to pull a muscle, I would go home and apply some sort of Tiger Balm or Icy Hot to the area and attempt not to further worsen it. Then, after a week or so, or until I feel better, I can go to the chiropractor and make sure my spine is aligned and in the best shape for exercise. Finally, generally, in the event of any exercise related injury, the best course of action is to take it easy for a while. Them, next time I find myself on the same machine, I will proceed with caution so I can figure out what I did to injure myself last time, and hopefully avoid it next time.
This incident alone hasn’t really changed my feelings toward exercise. After I was healed, I wasn’t afraid of further injury while working out. Although it was hard to get back into the routine of working out, I still enjoyed the experience and was excited to get back into shape and build up my resistance. In the long run, I would say this experience hurt me rather than helped me. Although it was an experience to learn and grow from, the leave of absence I had to take to recover was damaging to my exercise routine. But, I feel that since this happened, I am now less prone to have it happen again. Now I know to be more careful when doing exercise, and not to leave injury unattended. If I would have let my ankle heal and dealt with the problem at the time, it wouldn’t have taken so long to heal. But, now that I’ve learned from the experience, I’ll remember to take care of myself more when working out.
