After the “Great Crash,” the U.S. economy fell, so, the U.S. elected Franklin Roosevelt to put it back together, and damming played an important factor in helping the states prosper. Roosevelt, who never saw himself as anything but a ruler, was adored by the country. He used persuasiveness, rather than ruthlessness, to charm the nation. “The Great Depression and the Roosevelt administration, together with the pyramid-scheme economics of the river basin accounts, were more than enough to launch the federal dam-building program on a forty-year binge….Franklin Roosevelt said that he wanted to be remembered as the greatest conservationist and the greatest developer of all time.” By the time of the 1920s, California became wealthy from irrigation farming, and agriculture was a tremendously important part. “All together, the dams would give the project an annual yield of more than seven million acre-feet of water, enough to irrigate a million and a half two million, perhaps three million acres.” This would not have been possible without the dams. Although they cause a lot of harm and contribute to the destruction of many ecosystems, we owe a lot of the wealth we have today to them. Franklin Roosevelt was a great leader who did a lot of thing for this nation, although some would argue that he did some harm, he also helped us prosper.
