TAD One:
1. Are you surprised that such intense poverty exists in a rich country like the United States? Why or why not?
No, I am not surprised that such intense poverty exists in the United States. Wealthy people tend to cluster with people of similar status, this is commonly accepted. So, if there are clusters of the wealthy or affluent that migrate to areas such as San Diego or LA, there need to be people to do the work that they don’t want to. For every one rich person, there has to be at least 5 people at any given time doing their chores, making their food, sewing the clothes, etc. So, these less wealthy people probably cluster together, too, seeing as how it is a social norm. Following this pattern, it isn’t surprising that there is another level of below wealth that supports a community of extremely poor people.
2. Have you ever had experiences with poverty such as that described here in other parts of the United States? If so, where?
No, I have not had experiences with poverty such as that described here in other parts of the United States. I have been to areas with large homeless populations such as New York, but, I have never seen a community that mimicked that of a third world country.
3. What do you think the future holds for the families living in las colonias? Explain your prediction.
It is difficult to escape extreme poverty, especially that of a “third world colony,” so, unfortunately, there is probably no stable middle class life in the future for las colonias. Hopefully, these families will be able to make and save enough money to buy an actual house in a poor area and work as laborers and low wage workers so that they can provide for their families.
TAD Two:
1. How does tradition play a part in keeping people in slavery?
Tradition plays a part in slavery because it simply is the way things have always been done. If something is a tradition, it has been in place for hundreds of years, leaving the person who is next in line feeling obligated to do things the way their ancestors did.
2. What might explain the fact that the world still tolerates slavery?
The world still tolerates slavery because the people who care about the issue don’t know how to do anything about it, and the people who have the power to do something about to don’t feel they are responsible to help. We know that the government of the countries this is affecting won’t do anything, and why should the American Government help people dying in other countries where there are people dying in America? The world still tolerates slavery because people either see nothing wrong with it, they don’t know how to change things, or they don’t want to change things.
3. Explain the connection between slavery and poverty.
Almost exclusively poor people are the ones who become slaves, and the wealthy are the ones who own them. Wealthy people know they can take advantage of those struggling through poverty, and it is commonly accepted in these areas that if you are wealthy, you can own a slave, and when you are poor and it is a cultural norm for your family, you will be a slave.
