For this concentration, I created an instrument called a six strings. I started with an empty cigar box and peeled off any stickers that would later interfere with painting. I then used a wood burner to cut out three circles decreasing in size on the front opening on the box. Next, I used sandpaper to make all sides even and free of burned wood. Penultimately, I utilized the wood burner to make small holes for the strings to be strung through, and finally I strengthened the box using small wooden support beams. The six strings is based off of the six layers of the energy body. The first string stretching across the bottom represents the physical body of which the other strings project from. The second string, starting on the left hand side, represents the etheric body. The third string represents the astral body. The fourth string represents the emotional body. The fifth string represents the mental body. Finally, the sixth string represents the causal body. Although this instrument cannot actually be played, there is deep symbolism behind the placement of every element and color. When painting the instrument, I coordinated the colors with the chakras of the human body. Starting from the center hole, it is painted in a Van Gogh-esque style from red to purple, I also painted the sides gold. One challenge I had on this project was cutting out the holes on the top of the box. The wood is fragile yet solid, so, I had to push hard on the wood burner to make a hole, but if I pushed too hard the thin sections would snap and splinter. To solve this, I opened the box and laid the part I was cutting flat on a table, that way, it wouldn’t strain the sides. Rather, the pressure it took to burn through would transfer to the table. I am happy with the final product I created, the art piece comes together to be something of symbolism and simplicity, and there is deep meaning to its many components.
